Hantavirus outbreak on cruise MV Hondius raises health concerns

The World Health Organization was notified in early May 2026 of a hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius. The virus identified is the Andean hantavirus, the only known hantavirus strain that can transmit, albeit limitedly, from person to person. Since mid‑April, three passengers have died and cases have been confirmed among travelers of several nationalities.

Health authorities in the Dominican Republic and other affected countries are conducting contact tracing and containment measures. The WHO characterises the outbreak as a low risk to the general public, but notes heightened public anxiety due to memories of the COVID‑19 pandemic. Authorities are urged to communicate clearly to avoid misinformation and panic while encouraging people to rely on reliable sources for information.
