Hantavirus outbreak on cruise ship MV Hondius: recoveries, isolation

Health officials in British Columbia announced that a Canadian passenger who contracted Andes hantavirus on the cruise ship MV Hondius has recovered and been discharged. Three other Canadian passengers remain in a 42‑day quarantine and are asymptomatic. The Canadian public health agency said the overall risk to the Canadian population remains low.

In Spain, twelve contacts who were hospitalized in Madrid after exposure on the same ship have been released from isolation, while one confirmed case continues to be treated in the high‑security isolation unit of Hospital Gómez Ulla. The patient shows mild fever and is under medical supervision. All contacts must complete a 42‑day quarantine that began on 10 May. The MV Hondius, which departed Ushuaia, Argentina on 1 April for a South Atlantic crossing, experienced three deaths and four symptomatic infections among passengers before docking in Tenerife, Canary Islands, where passengers and crew were repatriated under coordination of the World Health Organization and Spanish authorities.
