Indonesia debates election law reforms and parliamentary threshold
Indonesia is seeing significant political and administrative developments. Discussions regarding the new Election Law (RUU Pemilu) are underway, with a focus on the proposed increase of the parliamentary threshold from 4% to 5%. While Sufmi Dasco Ahmad clarified that meetings between party leaders are currently in the brainstorming stage, the PDIP faction has expressed support for the 5% threshold to improve parliamentary efficiency. However, some parties, such as PSI, have raised concerns that a higher threshold could lead to more wasted votes.
On the fiscal front, President Prabowo Subianto has taken steps to cut regional transfer funds (TKD) due to ineffective budget utilization by some local governments. Simultaneously, the government is prioritizing food and energy security, alongside addressing poverty and stunting. In the housing sector, Minister Maruarar Sirait announced a target to conduct mass contract signings for 71,000 subsidized homes in December 2026.
Other notable updates include the expansion of community participation through the Nyawiji Parliament Forum in DIY, infrastructure connectivity efforts in Papua led by AHY, and the growth of microfinance institution (LKM) savings. In the agricultural sector, there are calls to dismantle rice fortification mafias to protect consumers.
