Hanwha advances integrated defense with new submarine and frigate projects

Hanwha Ocean and Hanwha Aerospace are demonstrating an integrated defense strategy by showcasing advanced naval and land-based military technologies. At Hanwha Ocean’s shipyard in Geoje, the Seohee, a 3,600-ton Jang Bogo-III Batch-II submarine, is undergoing final preparations for its launch later this year. This submarine features an advanced hybrid propulsion system combining Hanwha Ocean’s Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) with Hanwha Aerospace’s lithium-ion batteries, offering industry-leading endurance for diesel submarines.

Simultaneously, the Pyeongtaek, a 3,600-ton Ulsan-class Batch-III frigate, is undergoing system testing following its recent launch. The vessel is equipped with various advanced systems, including the Korean Vertical Launch System (KVLS). Hanwha Ocean has also implemented new construction methods, such as enlarging hull blocks to reduce assembly time by one to two months, a technique intended for future projects like the Korean Next-Generation Destroyer (KDDX).

This synergy between maritime and land-based defense is further highlighted by Hanwha Aerospace’s development of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) and various missile systems. The group aims to expand its simultaneous shipbuilding capacity by 2030 through the use of AI-based smart integrated control systems and automated production facilities.
