Hanwha Aerospace to mass-produce Arion-SMET unmanned vehicles

Hanwha Aerospace has unveiled a roadmap to transition its primary weapon systems, including the K9 self-propelled howitzer and Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher, into AI-based manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) combat systems by 2029. The company aims to establish a full lineup of six unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) across small, medium, and large categories by 2030.

Following a contract with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, Hanwha will begin mass-producing the Arion-SMET, South Korea’s first multi-purpose UGV. Approximately 40 units are scheduled for sequential delivery to Army and Marine Corps infantry units starting next year. The Arion-SMET features a localization rate of over 98% and is capable of autonomous driving, following personnel, and transporting up to 450kg of cargo. It is also equipped with a 7.62mm remote weapon station (RCWS) for combat support, though officials emphasized that AI will not make lethal firing decisions; humans will retain control over the trigger.

Hanwha is also targeting international markets, with interest reported from Romania, Finland, and Canada. The company plans to invest 2 trillion won by 2040 to develop 'Defense OS,' a national defense AI model designed to enhance the autonomy of ground combat systems.
