Hanwha Ocean identified as key partner for US shipbuilding revival

The Wall Street Journal has highlighted Hanwha Ocean as a critical external partner in the Trump administration’s efforts to revitalize the United States shipbuilding industry. With US shipbuilding capacity accounting for less than 1% of global output—significantly trailing China’s capacity by over 230 times—the US is looking toward allies like South Korea to support its maritime goals.

Following its acquisition of Philly Shipyard in December 2024, Hanwha has invested approximately $350 million in facility improvements, with plans to commit billions more. The company has already secured roles in US Navy programs, including a subcontract for next-generation logistics support ships and a contract for specialized vessels supporting the ‘Golden Dome’ missile defense system.

Despite these developments, challenges remain, including high domestic production costs, supply chain shortages, and limited site availability in the US. Furthermore, legislative uncertainty in Congress regarding defense budgets and regulations on foreign-built combatants poses a risk to long-term investment stability.
