Hanwha Power receives approval for 1,700 TEU battery-powered ship design
Hanwha Power has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its design of a 1,700 TEU battery-powered container ship. The design features a 151 MWh energy storage system (ESS) that utilizes containerized battery units as the primary propulsion source.
By using batteries that can be handled and stowed like standard cargo containers, the design aims to maximize cargo capacity and space efficiency while allowing for flexible battery replacement. The vessel is intended for short-sea and regional container transport, utilizing port charging infrastructure to operate without direct carbon emissions.
The AiP certificate was presented on October 22 at the Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cells Conference in Bergen, Norway. Hanwha Power has also completed the basic design for a 1,000 TEU battery-powered vessel as part of its effort to expand its zero-carbon maritime transport portfolio.
