Hanwha Qcells and POSCO partner to advance agrivoltaics in South Korea
Hanwha Qcells and POSCO have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote agrivoltaics in South Korea. The partnership aims to develop and supply specialized solar modules and substructures designed to allow farming and solar power generation to occur simultaneously.
By optimizing module placement and angles, the technology ensures crops receive necessary sunlight while capturing excess energy for electricity. This approach is considered highly suitable for South Korea’s limited land area and mountainous terrain. The collaboration will include the formation of the ‘Shintoburi Alliance,’ an industry group intended to provide integrated solutions covering finance, equipment, construction, and power sales.
The initiative follows the recent passage of the Agrivoltaic Power Generation Business Act, which extended the maximum permit period for such projects from 8 years to 23 years. This legislative change is expected to improve the economic viability of agrivoltaics for farmers and agricultural cooperatives. Hanwha Qcells will manufacture modules at its Jincheon plant, while POSCO will focus on providing corrosion-resistant substructure materials.
