Hanwha Systems and Schiebel partner to develop 5G aerial communication drones

Hanwha Systems has commenced the development of next-generation unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) designed for aerial communication. In collaboration with the Austrian drone specialist Schiebel, the project aims to create drones equipped with 5G base stations and aerial relay equipment to establish seamless tactical communication networks between ground and air assets in battlefield environments.

The partnership focuses on integrating Hanwha Systems’ high-performance communication, radar, and avionics technology into Schiebel’s proven UAV platforms. This collaboration seeks to expand the scope of cooperation from naval and marine applications to include army-oriented aerial communication missions. By utilizing existing test data and platforms, the companies intend to reduce development time and costs.

Key technical objectives include the development of ultra-small, lightweight, and high-efficiency 5G RF base station modules, as well as technologies to ensure communication survivability and navigation reliability during electronic warfare and jamming attacks.
