Hanwha Systems to develop AI-driven space situational awareness system

Hanwha Systems has signed a contract with the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute to participate in the development of the Korea Space Situational Awareness (K-SSA) system. As a private sector developer, the company will design and build a system that integrates space-based surveillance satellites with ground-based monitoring infrastructure.

The project involves deploying small satellites in low Earth orbit at an altitude of approximately 480km. These satellites will be equipped with optical cameras to detect and track both natural and artificial objects in space in real time.

To enhance response capabilities, the ground-based system will utilize artificial intelligence to analyze collected data. This AI integration aims to precisely predict orbital paths and assess the risks of collisions or the potential for space debris to fall to Earth. The system is intended to support rapid decision-making and situational awareness for relevant national agencies to protect space assets and enhance national space security.
