Hape Kerkeling warns of fascism and calls for democratic courage

German comedian Hape Kerkeling delivered a keynote speech at the Talisman Prize ceremony in Frankfurt's Paulskirche, where he issued a sharp warning against the rise of right-wing populism. Kerkeling criticized the use of “gutter jargon” by political extremists, stating that such rhetoric is how fascism begins. He urged citizens to remain courageous, optimistic, and to view diversity as a societal strength rather than a threat.

Kerkeling drew historical parallels to the rise of National Socialism, cautioning against the complacency of those who believe current political shifts will not lead to severe consequences. He emphasized that a strong society must protect the vulnerable and actively resist hatred to prevent history from repeating itself.

The event, organized by the Deutschlandstiftung Integration, also honored five local politicians for their commitment to social cohesion and diversity. Additionally, Kerkeling addressed recent headlines regarding an online petition calling for him to run for the office of Federal President, noting that while he takes the initiative seriously, he views the resulting public debate as beneficial for a free society.
