Hape Kerkeling considered for German presidency amid democratic advocacy

German comedian and author Hape Kerkeling has become a subject of public discussion regarding a potential candidacy for Federal President. A petition calling for Kerkeling to be nominated as a non-partisan candidate has garnered approximately 154,000 signatures. The movement seeks a figure capable of fostering social cohesion ahead of the January 30, 2027, election, which follows the end of Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s second term.

When asked about the possibility of holding the office, the 61-year-old Kerkeling did not rule it out, stating that given current global events, he “closes nothing more out.”

Separately, Kerkeling has been active in advocating for democracy and expressing opposition to the AfD. During a hearing in Thuringia regarding a potential ban on the party, Kerkeling addressed the rise of online hate speech. He called for mandatory moderation on social media to prevent humiliation and incitement, noting that he has personally faced hostility and death threats following his political stances.
