Happy Face Spider: Characteristics of Theridion grallator

The Happy Face spider, scientifically known as Theridion grallator, is a tiny species found in the forests of Hawaii. Measuring approximately five millimeters, these spiders typically live on the undersides of leaves at elevations between 300 and 1,800 meters.

The species earns its nickname from distinct patterns on its abdomen that resemble a smiley face. According to National Geographic, these markings serve as a protective mechanism to irritate predators. While the pattern is iconic, it is not universal; approximately 70 percent of the population is translucent yellow with little to no pattern, while the remaining 30 percent exhibit red or white markings.

Beyond its appearance, the Happy Face spider displays maternal care, a behavior noted by Cornell University as being relatively rare among arachnids.
