Harald Leitherer, former Schweinfurt district administrator, dies at 73

Harald Leitherer, the former district administrator (Landrat) of Schweinfurt, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, at the age of 73. Leitherer served as the head of the Schweinfurt district for 18 years, from 1995 to 2013.

During his tenure, Leitherer implemented several significant regional projects, including the expansion of the district road network and the establishment of a cycling path network exceeding 1,000 kilometers. He was also a pioneer in environmental protection, leading Schweinfurt to become the first district in Bavaria to implement comprehensive organic waste collection and initiating the region's first open-space photovoltaic plant.

District Administrator Florian Töpper honored Leitherer as a defining personality whose work focused on the development, economic strength, and quality of life within the district. Leitherer was a recipient of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2017. Per the wishes of his family, there will be no public funeral service.
