Harald Lesch calls for AI restrictions and water-conscious energy policies
Astrophysicist Harald Lesch has proposed a ban on the use of artificial intelligence for academic tasks up to the bachelor's degree level. He argues that such a restriction is necessary to ensure students properly train their cognitive abilities and to mitigate risks of academic fraud.
Lesch also addressed the intersection of technological growth and environmental constraints, specifically regarding water scarcity. He warned that the increasing demand for data centers requires massive amounts of electricity and cooling, which poses a risk during periods of rising temperatures and limited water resources.
In the context of the energy transition, Lesch advocates for a policy where energy production must not rely on technologies that require significant water cooling. He suggests prioritizing solar, wind, and heat pump technologies, noting that while electricity can be generated via sun and wind even during droughts, water resources cannot be artificially manufactured.
