Harald Lesch criticizes German government over 2026 heatwave

Lesch described the event as the deadliest natural disaster in Germany’s history, noting that the summer saw temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius and an unprecedented number of tropical nights.
According to the report, the heatwave resulted in 16,000 heat-related deaths in Germany. Lesch argued that while a flood with similar casualty numbers would trigger widespread outcry, the political response to these deaths has been insufficient.
