Harald Vodosek becomes Chief of the Austrian Armed Forces

Harald Vodosek has assumed the role of Chief of the General Staff of the Austrian Armed Forces, succeeding Rudolf Striedinger. Vodosek, who previously served as the national director of armament, takes command at a time when the military faces significant procurement decisions, including the successor to the Eurofighter fleet, medium-range air defense, and drone defense systems.

Vodosek expressed support for the recent military service reform, which extends compulsory service to “6 plus 3 months.” He described the extension as an “ultimate and maximal gain for the security of the Republic of Austria,” noting that it restores the ability to fill the militia on a mandatory basis. While the military service commission had suggested an “8 plus 2” month model, Vodosek characterized the current decision as a pragmatic outcome of the legislative and executive processes.

His appointment follows a period of internal deliberation where Bruno Hofbauer, the deputy Chief of the General Staff, was considered a long-time favorite for the position. The transition occurs amid discussions regarding a projected 12.7 billion euro financing gap in national defense and the ambitious timeline for upcoming military and civil service reforms.
