Harare prepares to issue fines via new AI traffic camera system

In Harare, Zimbabwe, the government is preparing to issue fines through the new Smart Traffic and Crime Management System. The artificial intelligence-powered camera network, which is 99% complete across 20 sites, has already recorded over two million violations.

Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe stated that the system detects offenses such as speeding, illegal parking, jumping red lights, and mobile phone use while driving. To ensure accuracy, traffic officers in a central control room must validate the footage before a ticket is issued. The system also maintains an audit trail of all validation activities to ensure accountability.
