Harburg, Germany Starts Multi‑Year Renovation of Gloria Tunnel and Pedestrian Zone

In Harburg’s city centre, extensive construction work has begun on the Gloria Tunnel and the surrounding pedestrian zone on Lüneburger Straße. The project includes replacing stairways, widening barrier‑free sections, installing a new elevator, and rebuilding the tunnel’s drainage system. Temporary ramps allow pedestrians to navigate the site while the works continue, which are scheduled to run until March 2027.

The renovation also involves the demolition of large concrete art installations, replacement of tiles, and the construction of an 88‑room aparthotel on a seven‑storey site within a building gap, expected to open in autumn 2026. The responsible state agency, Landesbetrieb Straßen, Brücken und Gewässer, assures that the tunnel will remain passable throughout the construction phases.
