Hard disk drive prices experience significant volatility

Hard disk drive (HDD) prices have seen substantial fluctuations and increases in recent years. For instance, a Seagate BarraCuda 8TB internal HDD, which cost approximately 14,000 yen in 2022, rose to around 17,000 yen in 2024 due to the weak yen. By late 2025, prices for the same capacity reached the 20,000 to 30,000 yen range, with standard prices currently hovering around 40,000 yen.

High-capacity drives, such as the 24TB Seagate BarraCuda, offer a better price-per-unit ratio. While these units typically cost around 100,000 yen, they have been seen as low as 79,800 yen during sales. Consumers are increasingly managing data by consolidating smaller drives into larger ones to mitigate rising costs and optimize storage efficiency.
