Hardenbergerbrug on A28 near Nijkerk reopens after emergency repairs

The Hardenbergerbrug on the A28 motorway near Nijkerk has been reopened to traffic following emergency repairs. The bridge was closed in both directions on September 7 after inspections revealed significant erosion of sand and gravel around the bridge piers, compromising structural safety.

Rijkswaterstaat conducted 24-hour repair operations, using sand, gravel, and stone to stabilize the foundations. The closure caused major traffic congestion on surrounding routes, including the A1 and A50. While the bridge is reopening, the Arkervaart waterway remains temporarily closed to shipping.

This incident highlights broader concerns regarding Dutch infrastructure. Officials have warned that approximately 80 billion euros is required to address significant maintenance backlogs for roads, bridges, and railways across the country. Sector representatives have expressed concern that such closures may become more frequent as aging infrastructure reaches the end of its lifespan.
