Hardware enthusiasts create custom retro gaming modifications

Hardware modders have developed unique adaptations for classic gaming consoles, transforming them into modern functional devices.

One project, known as NESPC, converts a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) into a functional computer capable of running a customized version of Windows 98. The modification utilizes an FPGA Next186 to process x86 instructions and an EverDrive N8 Pro as an external video card. The setup includes a custom ROM to simulate the Windows 98 interface, a 3D-printed music player called NESCD, and a Wi-Fi module for limited internet connectivity.

In a separate project, a modder named LCLDIY created the PlayStation 2 DUO, a foldable handheld version of the console. This device features a flexible screen salvaged from an early foldable smartphone and a custom 3D-printed chassis designed with a specific hinge angle to prevent screen damage. To achieve the compact form factor, the original PlayStation 2 motherboard was physically cut to reduce its size.
