Hardware modder recreates unreleased 16GB NVIDIA RTX 3070 Ti
A hardware enthusiast, known online as Fmklab, has successfully engineered a functional recreation of an unreleased NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti variant featuring 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM.
To achieve this, the modder utilized an Asus TUF GeForce RTX 3070 PCB as a base, rather than a standard 3070 Ti board. This choice was strategic, as the 3070 PCB is designed for GDDR6 memory, making it more compatible and cost-effective for the modification than the faster GDDR6X memory found on retail 3070 Ti models. The process involved replacing the original GA104 processor with an unlocked GA104 chip from an RTX 3070 Ti and swapping the original 8GB of memory for eight 2GB GDDR6 modules.
Beyond the physical soldering, the project required technical intervention to ensure the system correctly recognized the expanded capacity, as initial tests only detected 8GB. The resulting 16GB configuration allows the card to handle larger datasets, which can benefit high-resolution texture mapping and complex rendering tasks, though the use of GDDR6 instead of GDDR6X may impact certain performance metrics.
