Hardware standards evolve to meet extreme environment computing demands

The demand for high-performance computing in extreme environments is driving significant advancements in hardware standards and chip design. In the military and aerospace sectors, the industry is increasingly adopting Modular Open Systems Architecture (MOSA) to prevent vendor lock-in and allow for modular upgrades. The OpenVPX family of VITA standards remains a primary framework for these applications.

To meet rising bandwidth requirements, the ratified VITA 91 specification offers double-density connectors capable of providing 200 GbE performance, serving as a bridge toward the higher-performance VITA 100 standard.

Simultaneously, the rise of orbital data centers, satellite constellations, and quantum computing is pushing semiconductor design to its limits. Chips must now withstand simultaneous stresses, including radiation, thermal shock, vibration, and cryogenic temperatures. This shift has led to increased activity in radiation-hardened fabrication processes, particularly to support defense initiatives and space-based infrastructure.
