Harete Hipango-Brownlie critiques Māori political leadership

Harete Hipango-Brownlie, a Whanganui candidate for the New Zealand First Party, has issued a critique of current Māori politics, arguing that the movement is increasingly dominated by grievance, division, and political theatre.

Hipango-Brownlie specifically targets Te Pāti Māori, claiming the party presents itself as the sole voice for Māori without delivering practical leadership or tangible opportunities. The critique includes a call for Te Pāti Māori president John Tamihere to step aside to allow the party to recover, alleging that his leadership has squandered political momentum.

Advocating for a more conservative approach, Hipango-Brownlie emphasizes values such as family, kinship, faith, community, service, and duty. The candidate calls for a leadership style modeled after historical figures like Sir Apirana Ngata and Dame Whina Cooper, which they describe as pragmatic, united, and focused on looking forward rather than dwelling on past injustices.
