Harghita and Banat designated European Gastronomic Regions
The Harghita and Banat regions have been recognized by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT) as European Gastronomic Regions. Harghita will hold the title in 2027, while Banat is scheduled for 2028. Dobrogea is currently a candidate for the 2029 designation, with a decision expected in May.
To prepare for its 2027 tenure, Harghita has announced a program featuring 52 gastronomic events and 17 festivals, including Taste of Transylvania and the Balmoș Festival. The recognition aims to preserve culinary heritage, support local producers, and promote sustainable tourism.
In support of Banat’s 2028 designation, a new magazine titled “Banat, European Gastronomic Region and its Routes” was launched in Vršac, Serbia. The publication, edited by the European Union Banat in Romania, seeks to promote local gastronomic points in Timiș and Caraș-Severin counties to regional tourists.
