Harghita County recognized in global sustainable tourism top 100

Harghita County in Romania has been selected for the ‘Top 100 Stories 2026’ by the Green Destinations organization, which highlights global best practices in sustainable tourism. The selection, announced at an international conference in Kranj, Slovenia, recognized the county under the category of Culture and Heritage.

The recognition focuses on the initiative ‘Tasting Szekler Heritage: How Harghita County Turns Living Traditions into Responsible Tourism’. This program emphasizes that local gastronomy, traditional clothing, crafts, and community festivals are living cultural values rather than mere tourist attractions. By integrating these traditions into the tourism experience, the county aims to direct economic benefits toward local producers, artisans, and entrepreneurs.

A key component of this success is the ‘Produs Secuiesc’ certification system, established in 2009 by the Harghita County Council. As of 2024, this brand supported 197 producers and approximately 1,500 products, helping to preserve traditional food and artisanal goods. Additionally, Harghita is set to hold the title of European Gastronomic Region in 2027, as awarded by IGCAT.
