Harikla centaur ring system shows unexpected rapid changes

Astronomers have discovered that the ring system surrounding the centaur Harikla, a celestial body located between Saturn and Uranus, is undergoing rapid changes. A study published in the journal ‘Science Advances’ reveals that the ring system has shifted significantly in just a few years, challenging the long-held scientific belief that ring systems around small solar system bodies are relatively stable.

Using data from the James Webb Space Telescope and observations from stellar occultations over the last decade, researchers from the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia found that the two dense rings are behaving differently. Researcher Pablo Santos-Sanz noted that while the inner ring has become significantly more opaque, the outer ring has become less opaque. This unexpected dynamic behavior suggests that the rings of Harikla may be subject to much more complex physical processes than previously understood.
