Haris Alexiou discusses retirement due to vocal health issues

Renowned Greek singer Haris Alexiou discussed her decision to retire from live performances during a premiere interview on the television show ‘Kalýtera Argá’ with Athinaiada Nega. Alexiou revealed that her departure was prompted by vocal health issues, noting that a doctor in Athens informed her she had been experiencing problems with her voice for a long time. She described the realization occurring during a collaboration with Stavros Xarchakos at Gazarte, where she found she could no longer perform songs she deeply loved due to her voice hardening.

Alexiou addressed her personal life, mentioning she has been single since 2004, and spoke about her two marriages and her son, Manos. She also shared reflections on fellow artists, expressing support for Giannis Paros and his right to remain on stage, and remembering the late Giorgos Mazonakis, with whom she shared a relationship of mutual respect.

Reflecting on her 50-year career, Alexiou stated that while she does not miss singing, she feels a sense of fulfillment. She noted that her decision to step away was an act of self-awareness, stating, ‘If I had not decided to stop singing, the world would have decided it.’
