Hariyali Teej celebrations and fasting guidelines observed across South Asia
Hariyali Teej, a Hindu festival observed on the third day of the bright half of the month of Shravana, falls on 15 August 2026. Married women (suhagins) fast and worship Shiva and Parvati to pray for their husbands' long life and marital happiness. A traditional belief holds that after marriage a woman celebrates her first Hariyali Teej at her maternal home, a practice linked to the legend of Radha Rani returning to her birthplace, Barsana, for the festival.
Guidelines for the fast advise women to begin preparations the night before, keep water and fruit supplies ready, stay hydrated by drinking 8‑10 glasses of water or coconut water throughout the day, and consume fruits such as apple, banana, and pomegranate. They are cautioned against eating salty or stale foods, standing for long periods, and are advised not to fast if pregnant or ill without medical guidance.
