Harkis commemorations held in Berdoues and Narbonne

Commemorations for the Harkis, former auxiliary members of the French army during the Algerian War, took place in various locations in France.

In Berdoues, the association Harkis Occitanie Mémoires (H.O.M.) held its traditional memorial day. The event included a march through a state forest following the path used by former Harkis to reach forestry work sites between 1962 and 1975. The program featured readings of testimonies by the children of Harkis and an exhibition regarding the history of the Mirande camp and daily life in the Caneron hamlet.

In Narbonne, the national day of tribute to the Harkis was marked by two separate ceremonies. The Association des anciens militaires et harkis d’Algérie organized a gathering at the Monument aux morts to protest the relocation of the official ceremony to the Monument des martyrs de la Résistance. Association representatives expressed concerns that moving the ceremony to a site dedicated to the Resistance could lead to greater invisibility for the Harkis community, emphasizing that their primary goal is recognition.
