Harland & Wolff cranes to undergo £3.1m refurbishment

The iconic Samson and Goliath gantry cranes at Harland & Wolff in Belfast are undergoing a £3.1 million modernisation project. Owned by Navantia UK, the refurbishment includes overhauling engines, replacing catenary power cables, and performing structural and electrical repairs.

Work has commenced on Goliath, the 96-metre crane built in 1969, with plans to move to the 106-metre Samson crane once complete. Both cranes possess a lifting capacity of 840 tonnes.

This maintenance is part of a broader £98.5 million recapitalisation of the Harland & Wolff shipyard. The investment aims to prepare the facility for naval and commercial shipbuilding, including the construction of three fleet solid support ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.
