Harley-Davidson targeted by retaliatory international tariffs

Harley-Davidson has become a primary target for retaliatory tariffs due to its high political and symbolic value as an American brand. Following increases in U.S. tariffs, Canada recently imposed a 50% import tax on the company’s products. This follows previous actions by the European Union, which applied 25% retaliatory duties in 2018 and threatened further measures in 2025.

To maintain stable retail prices, the company has previously absorbed over $170 million in tariff costs over the last eight years. While Harley-Davidson has not disclosed specific plans regarding the Canadian market—which accounted for 4% of its $4.5 billion revenue last year—dealers expressed concern that consumers may be unable to absorb significant future price increases.

Analysts suggest the company remains a target because of its identity as a quintessential American manufacturer and its location in Wisconsin, a key electoral state.
