Harlingen delegation visits Chortkiv to strengthen municipal cooperation
A delegation from the Dutch municipality of Harlingen, led by Mayor Ina Sjerps, conducted a working visit to Chortkiv, a city in western Ukraine, from September 2 to September 6. The visit was part of a cooperation program organized by the Association of Netherlands Municipalities International (VNGI), which connects Dutch municipalities with Ukrainian cities to provide expertise and practical support.
During the visit, the two municipalities signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize their intent to cooperate. Key areas of focus include social housing, construction, and waste management. Chortkiv expressed significant interest in Dutch expertise regarding waste collection, processing, and recycling, with the waste management organization Omrin providing an online presentation on the subject.
The delegation also participated in the Chortkiv City Days, which included ceremonies to honor the victims of the war. The visit aimed to strengthen ties and discuss the challenges faced by municipalities due to the ongoing conflict, including the reception of displaced persons and the potential return of residents to Ukraine.
