Harlingen proposes stricter parking regulations for 2027

The municipality of Harlingen is proposing significant changes to its parking regulations, set to take effect on January 1, 2027, pending city council approval. The new measures aim to improve parking availability for residents, businesses, and visitors by addressing high pressure in the city center.

Key proposals include introducing paid parking on Sundays and public holidays, which are currently free. The municipality also plans to abolish the maximum daily rate for street parking to discourage long-term street parking and encourage the use of peripheral parking lots.

Additionally, the resident permit system will be restructured. The current price tiers will be removed, meaning subsequent permits will no longer be more expensive than the first. However, a limit of five resident permits per address will remain, with specific restrictions on how many of those allow parking within the city center.

Alderman Hendrik Sijtsma stated that the primary goal is not to generate additional municipal revenue, but to ensure that available parking spaces are used more fairly and efficiently.
