Harlingen uses reclaimed bricks for new social housing
Approximately 35,000 reclaimed bricks from demolished houses in the Fonteinslanden district of Dokkum are being repurposed for a new social housing project in Harlingen. The bricks will be used for the facades of ten social rental homes on Abraham Kuyperstraat.
To ensure the materials remain intact, the demolition process involves a specialized approach where walls are dismantled step-by-step rather than using standard demolition methods. Following removal, the bricks undergo manual cleaning and inspection. The project aims to salvage roughly 65 percent of the bricks for reuse, reducing the need for new production and minimizing construction waste. The new housing units are expected to be completed by the summer of 2027.
