Harmony Energy energizes Skeeby battery storage project in UK
Harmony Energy has successfully energized the Skeeby Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near Richmond, North Yorkshire. The 35 MW / 70 MWh project utilizes Tesla Megapack technology and is preparing for commercial operation. Once fully operational, the facility will be capable of powering approximately 120,000 homes for two hours by storing energy from renewable sources like wind and solar.
The project aims to strengthen the United Kingdom’s clean energy supply, improve grid stability, and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels by mitigating the curtailment of renewable power. This site marks the first project to go live for Harmony Energy following a strategic investment from the Swiss energy services provider Alpiq.
Utility-scale battery storage systems serve as critical infrastructure for modern electrical networks, acting as a buffer to manage the variability of renewable energy. These systems provide essential services such as frequency regulation, voltage support, and peak shaving, allowing for a more reliable and flexible transition to a lower-carbon electricity system.
