Harold Godwineson biography explores the impact of the Battle of Hastings

A new biography titled ‘Harold: Warrior King’ by Tom Licence, a professor at the University of East Anglia, explores the life of Harold Godwineson, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England. Published by Yale University Press, the book examines Harold’s calculated rise to the throne and his eventual defeat at the Battle of Hastings in October 1066.

The defeat by Duke William of Normandy initiated the Norman Conquest, which fundamentally transformed England. According to historian Robert Tombs, the conquest ‘annihilated England’s ruling class, physically and genetically’ regarding the male line. The transition led to the replacement of the English aristocracy with Norman French nobility, the introduction of feudalism, changes in inheritance laws through primogeniture, and a shift in architectural styles toward Romanesque stone castles.

Licence portrays Harold as a complex and calculating figure who ascended to power without royal blood, often using political maneuvering to secure his interests.
