HarperCollins India to publish Sonia Gandhi’s memoir

HarperCollins India has announced it will publish Sonia Gandhi’s memoir, ‘Belonging: A Journey of Love’, in India on November 10, 2026. The announcement follows a controversy involving Penguin Random House India, which had previously been slated to release the book but ultimately withdrew from the domestic publishing arrangement.

The impasse between the author’s representatives and Penguin Random House India reportedly centered on disagreements over editorial changes and deletions to the manuscript. While Congress leaders alleged that the publisher faced external pressure to remove content regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the RSS, and India-China relations, Penguin Random House India denied any external influence, stating the decision resulted from a stalemate over a specific issue during the standard fact-checking and editorial process.

The 544-page memoir chronicles Gandhi’s life, from her childhood in Italy to her marriage to Rajiv Gandhi and her decades in Indian politics. HarperCollins described the work as one of the most anticipated political memoirs of its time, offering an insider’s view of India’s social and political evolution.
