Harrisburg Jewish Federation faces institutional collapse

The Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg is facing a significant institutional collapse, marked by the recent layoff of its entire support staff. This development follows months of public decline that has disrupted the infrastructure of Jewish communal life for approximately 9,000 residents in the Pennsylvania state capital.

The crisis includes the closure of various programs, the displacement of local institutions, and the planned sale of the Alexander Grass Campus for Jewish Life, a hub purchased by the federation for $4.5 million in 2022.

In an unusual move, the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) intervened by dispatching a former federation leader to assist with difficult financial decisions. JFNA President and CEO Eric Fingerhut previously described the local federation’s business model as ‘not viable,’ noting that mistakes had caused distress and division within the community.
