Harrogate NHS Trust implements AI for breast cancer diagnosis

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust has become the first NHS trust in the United Kingdom to implement an artificial intelligence-enabled HER2 tissue scanning system into clinical practice. The technology, utilizing a Roche scanner, is designed to assist pathologists in assessing HER2 status in breast cancer tissue samples by identifying the presence of the HER2/neu gene.

By capturing high-resolution digital images and using advanced algorithms to automate initial pattern detection, the system allows pathologists to review cases more efficiently while maintaining full clinical oversight. This acceleration in the diagnostic process is intended to reduce patient waiting times, ease anxiety, and allow for faster decisions regarding targeted cancer therapies.

The acquisition of the scanner was funded by more than £40,000 raised through a 30th-anniversary fundraising campaign by the Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity. This initiative is part of a broader digital innovation program at the Trust, which already includes AI applications for fracture diagnosis and chest X-ray reporting.
