Harry Bains appointed chancellor of Kwantlen Polytechnic University

Harry Bains, a former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Surrey-Newton, has been appointed as the next chancellor of Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU). Bains, a longtime labour advocate, succeeds Kwuntiltunaat Kim Baird, the former elected chief of Tsawwassen First Nation.

Bains previously served on the KPU board of governors for six years during the 1990s, including three years as vice-chair. He also received an honorary Doctor of Laws from the institution in 2025. As chancellor, he will serve as the university’s ceremonial head, with responsibilities including presiding over convocations.

KPU President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Diane Purvey noted Bains’ long-standing engagement with the university through his political service and board involvement.
