Germany: Court confirms child abuse conviction for former politician

The German Federal Court of Justice (BGH) has upheld the conviction of former FDP member of parliament Hartmut Ebbing for child abuse. The ruling, issued by the 6th Criminal Senate in Leipzig, dismissed appeals from the defendants, making the previous verdict legally binding.

In March, the Braunschweig Regional Court sentenced Ebbing to two years and ten months in prison. He was convicted alongside a teacher from Lower Saxony for sexual acts involving a seven-year-old boy. While Ebbing denied the allegations, the teacher admitted to performing sexual acts on her son and sharing explicit images with Ebbing.

This case follows a prior conviction in February 2025, where Ebbing received a suspended sentence for the possession and distribution of child pornography in Berlin. Investigators were led to the crimes in Lower Saxony through chat messages and image files seized during the Berlin proceedings.
