Haruto Takahashi wins Sawamura Award

Haruto Takahashi, a pitcher for the Hanshin Tigers, has been awarded the Sawamura Award, the highest honor for starting pitchers in Japanese professional baseball. The selection committee, chaired by Tsuneo Horiuchi, announced the decision unanimously on October 26 in Tokyo.

Takahashi recorded 16 wins and 3 losses with a .842 winning percentage and a 1.87 ERA across 23 appearances this season. He completed five games, including four shutouts, and recorded 150 strikeouts over 159 innings. He met four of the seven updated selection criteria: wins, winning percentage, strikeouts, and ERA.

The award marks the first time a Hanshin player has received the honor since Kei Igawa in 2003. Takahashi, 30, overcame five surgeries, including Tommy John surgery, to achieve these results and contribute to the Tigers' Central League championship. He expressed gratitude to his trainers and physical therapists, noting that his ability to pitch significant innings was his most meaningful achievement this season.
