Harvard and Penn State studies link brief strength training to longer lifespan
Two recent studies highlight the health benefits of short, regular strength‑training sessions. Penn State professor Christopher Sciamanna detailed a four‑minute daily routine consisting of push‑ups, squats, step‑ups and resistance‑band rows. Participants who followed the program for 12 weeks showed marked improvements in balance and walking ability, factors linked to lower mortality, according to results published in PLOS ONE.
A separate analysis by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health examined data from nearly 150,000 adults over three decades. Researchers found that 90–120 minutes of resistance exercise per week lowered overall premature‑death risk by 13 percent, with a 19 percent reduction in cardiovascular deaths and a 27 percent drop in deaths from neurodegenerative diseases. Combining resistance work with aerobic activity (walking, running, cycling, etc.) was associated with up to a 45 percent lower mortality risk. The study, reported in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, emphasized that home‑based workouts using bands or water bottles can achieve these benefits.
Both pieces of research suggest that even minimal, manageable strength‑training sessions can significantly extend healthspan, offering a practical strategy for broader public adoption.
