Harvard researchers develop Mobilio app for blind navigation

Researchers at Harvard University have developed a mobile application called Mobilio designed to assist blind and low-vision individuals with navigation. The study, published in Nature Biomedical Engineering, details how the app provides continuous assistance comparable to a human guide.

Developed by bioengineering student Raymond Liu and Professor Patrick Slade, the application was informed by a survey of over 100 individuals in the visually impaired community. Key requirements identified included reliable step-by-step directions, continuous sidewalk orientation, and real-time obstacle detection and avoidance.

Unlike standard GPS mapping tools, Mobilio utilizes integrated smartphone hardware—including the camera, GPS, inertial measurement units, and LiDAR sensors—to create high-precision 3D maps and identify obstacles in real time to ensure safer movement.
