Thymus gland health linked to longevity and cancer resistance
New research highlights the critical role of the thymus, a small immune gland located behind the breastbone, in longevity and disease prevention. While the thymus typically begins to shrink in early adulthood, studies suggest that maintaining thymus health is strongly associated with a lower risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders.
Research indicates that individuals with healthier thymus tissue may have significantly lower mortality rates. A decline in thymus function can lead to weakened immune defenses and increased systemic inflammation, often referred to as ‘inflammaging’. This process is a known contributor to cancer progression and resistance to therapies.
In laboratory studies, the thymus hormone thymulin has shown potential in reducing age-dependent inflammation. In mice, treating cancer-bearing subjects with thymulin made other cancer treatments more effective. Researchers suggest that lifestyle habits—such as avoiding ultra-processed foods, maintaining muscle mass, prioritizing sleep, and regular exercise—may help preserve thymus function and long-term immune resilience.
