Harvard University wins dismissal of Trump administration antisemitism lawsuit

A federal judge in Boston has dismissed a lawsuit brought by the Trump administration against Harvard University. The lawsuit alleged that the university failed to protect Jewish and Israeli students from antisemitic harassment and discrimination on campus, potentially violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

U.S. District Judge Richard G. Stearns ruled that the government’s claims were based on incidents that were “too isolated and episodic” to prove a pattern of ongoing institutional noncompliance. The judge noted that many of the cited incidents occurred during pro-Palestinian protests in the 2023-2024 academic year, with only a few recent incidents from March 2025.

The administration had sought to recover billions of dollars in federal research grants, following a move in February 2025 to freeze over $2 billion in funds. Harvard has denied the allegations, describing the legal action as retaliatory and asserting that it has taken proactive steps to combat antisemitism and enforce anti-discrimination policies.

The Department of Justice has expressed disagreement with the ruling and is currently assessing its next steps for appeal.
