Harvey Colchado seeks oversight of Peru's Interior Minister and police chief
Peruvian deputy Harvey Colchado, second vice‑president of the lower house, said he will monitor the work of newly appointed Interior Minister General César Astudillo. After attending a patriotic military parade, Colchado praised Astudillo’s anti‑narcoterrorism experience in the Huallaga and VRAEM regions, but added that his party will "give a quota of confidence, but we will also supervise" the ministry’s actions.
In a separate move, Colchado filed a formal disciplinary complaint against Police National Commander General Óscar Arriola, alleging two very serious infractions (MG‑44 and MG‑50) for allegedly breaching police protocols and abusing authority. He asked the Interior Ministry’s Internal Affairs Office to suspend Arriola while investigations proceed.
Both initiatives reflect Colchado’s push for greater political control over Peru’s security institutions amid ongoing concerns about terrorism and police conduct.
