Harvey Elliott sent off during Valencia's defeat to Villarreal
Harvey Elliott, a midfielder on loan from Liverpool, was sent off during Valencia's 2-1 La Liga defeat against Villarreal at the Estadio de Mestalla. After entering the match as a substitute in the 70th minute for Javi Guerra, Elliott received two yellow cards in quick succession in the 89th minute for dissent toward the referee.
Villarreal secured the victory with a goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time. The red card left Valencia to finish the match with ten players. This incident follows a difficult period for the 23-year-old, who has struggled to secure a starting position during his loan spell in Spain.
Valencia manager Javier Aguirre defended the player following the match, stating that the sending-off was "absurd and ridiculous" given that Elliott barely speaks Spanish. Aguirre took responsibility for the decision to play him, noting, “It’s not his fault, but entirely my fault for playing the player I did.”
